West Northants Sustainable Food Place

Our alliance believes that good food matters. Whilst this was true pre-covid, we believe covid 19 has highlghted the importance of good food, produced locally, and available to all - especially those on low incomes, to improve health and the local economy

Working together, Sustain,   Food Matters and the Soil Association  lead a national programme to improve food quality at a local level. Its called Sustainable Food Places.

To register as a Sustainable Food Place, in any local area organisations have to work together to commit to action to improving the quality of food under six key headings. These are:

In West Northants a group of key organisations representing a wide range of interest in good, sustainable food has come together to inspire and co-ordinate work under the headings above and produce a sustainable food strategy for our area. The thematic areas covered above are broad and diverse, so we include in our steering gropup membership people and organisations who between them cover all these areas.

We include:

  • The voluntary sector: organisations like Northampton Hope Centre and Northants ACRE
  • Environmental groups like Transition Town and Circular economies network
  • Northamptonshire Public Health
  • Local councils which will form West Northants Unitary Council
  • The University of Northampton
  • Northampton General Hospital
  • Northampton Partnership Homes
  • Made in Northampton (local food producers)

Our role is not to lead action within the specific areas listed above: this is typically done by separate working groups and alliances such as the Food Aid Alliance also found on this site. Our role is to inspire action by such groups and link their actions  to create this wider and broader programme. For example, there is quite comprehensive work on food poverty which is available on this site which is led by its alliance members, but it forms an important part of the Sustainable Food Strategy work described here.

Our first piece of work is to register as a Sustainable Food Place with Sustain and the Soil Association

After this is complete we will start to do more, especially when the covid pandemic is contained.

To register, we have to carry out a range of tasks:

  • Complete a food charter for our area (Read it Here)
  • To come together as a group, as we have done
  • Map policy and strategy locally that looks at food issues (see here)
  • Map good food activities locally
  • Complete an action plan

We are working hard to complete registration as a Sustainable Food Place in March of this year.

On behalf of the alliance, Northampton Hope Centre convenes this work and chairs meetings, and with Sustain and Lottery funding employs a development worker to carry out the necessary work to register. She can be contacted on leila@northamptonhopecentre.org.uk
