ABOUT West Northants Community Growers

We are an informal alliance of community growing projects within the West Northants area, which aim to grow food sustainably and to encourage others to grow for health, pleasure and for environmental benefit.

We believe covid 19 has highlighted the importance of good food, produced locally, and available to all - especially those on low incomes, to improve health and the local economy.

Local growing spaces offer opportunities for:

  • Growing food cheaply
  • Reducing food poverty
  • Improving mental and physical health
  • Providing therapeutic gardening
  • Helping the environment
  • Reducing food miles
  • Reducing reliance on imported food
  • Having fun outdoors
  • Offering training and career opportunities
  • Education about better diets and cooking using veg
  • Volunteering, community engagement and cohesion

Not all projects in this alliance are the same. Some strive to be organic, some to work under permaculture principles; some focus most on growing to tackle poverty; or grow to help people alleviate mental health or other issues. All of us share in some part of the overall aims above.

We are also registered with Sustain's Growing for Good programme, the national alliance of growing projects of all types. Read about that here

Community Growing partnerships can learn a lot from resources also available on the Social Farms and Gardens association website (Hope are members). You can see this here

There are similar projects in other parts of the historic county of Northamptonshire. Read about them here
